Set of 6 matched KT88 JJ Tesla specially selected for the Ampeg SVT.

The reason for offering this set is that it does offer some major differences when compared to the stock 6550. I have one of my vintage ampeg SVT set up with KT88 and have used this for over 10 years.

The first thing you will need to do is get a good tech who knows Ampeg as it will need rebiasing and some additional component changes depending on your model.

So what are the main differences over the 6550.

The KT88 can handle larger plate voltages and it produces less distortion.

It is very well balanced with an incredibly smooth midrange with excellent detail and clarity. The top end treble response is also very clear with any harshness or fuzziness. It provides a very tight clear and musical sound and a warmer and more rounded sound.

The 6550 in comparison is far more aggressive. The midrange is punchier and hard hitting with less smoothness. The treble has a more metallic edge to it. The thing I love about 6550 is that Ampeg trade mark snarl is far more pronounced with 6550.

So if you are looking for a cleaner more refined sound with a big rounded tone then the KT88 will be the output valves for you.
