DR Z amplifiers were founded in 1988 by Mike Zaite, a.k.a. Dr. Z.in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. In 1994 Zaite built several more amps for Joe Walsh to use on the 1994 Eagles World Tour this put DR Z name firmly in the public eye. Dr. Z amplifiers are beautifully made and many use a unique circuit design bases on the EF86 pentode. Our upgrade kits use the best combination of new old stock and modern day valves. These we believe will give you the best sound and performance from your amplifier. You have not compromised in your choice of amplifier, so why compromised on the choice of valves.
This set uses a combination of the Harma ECC83 Retro warm sound with more input gain from the Mazda EF86 combined with the high grade USA made Philips 6V6GTfor the ultimate sound.

The heart and the soul of the amplifier is the unique use of classic EF86 pentode. It has a gain thats 50% higher than the hottest 12AX7 this amp has its own distinct voice.

The EF86 Mazda excels in guitar amplifier applications due to the design of the Russian Mazda EF86 having a lower output impedance; the result is 10 % more gain when compared to other new old stock EF86s.The result is a hotter sound with earlier break up and a more aggressive dynamic lead sound. The overdriven tone is punchier whist retaining a warm sustaining sound with plenty of upper harmonics.

The Harma ECC83 Retros have a harmonically rich and detailed sound with a smooth linear midrange and extended frequency response. When overdriven it produces a huge sustaining tone with warm mids and tight fat punchy lows.

The Philips 6V6GTis used as no other 6V6GT supplies that sparkling clean sound and top end chime as well as this valve. That is why this valve is considered the bench mark when it comes to Fender style clarity. It simply out classes the modern made 6V6GT without exception.

This combination removes the High end fizz and the rather harsh distortion characteristic which is a common complaint from owners of this amplifier when Chinese or JJ 6V6GT are used.

The Harma GZ34 Retro is based on the Mullard GZ34 and is used as it provides the correct rectification with no reduction in B+ voltage unlike many of the modern GZ34 on the market today.
