Laney Amplifiers were born in the West Midlands in 1967 by Lyndon Laney. The West Midlands was UK industrial heartland and Lyndon who was playing with The Band of Joy which included John Bonham on drums and Robert Plant on vocals wanted to design amplifiers that sounded different from what was commercially available.

The West Midlands has given us some of the greatest bands and most talented musicians that the UK has ever produced. So it is no surprise that Laney has grown into a multinational company with a loyal and strong customer base.

Laney can be rightly credited with the design of amplifiers that founded Heavy metal as Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath has been a lifelong user of Laney amplifiers. Today, Laney Still works with Black Sabbath and modern artists such as The Prodigy, The Foo Fighters, and Skindred. Laney are the jewel in the crown of UK amplifier manufacture as they continue to product a range of well-designed good sounding amplifiers. These upgrade kits are designed to help you get the best out of these British designed Amplifiers.

6L6WGB Option

The Harma ECC83 STR Philips 6L6WGB full upgrade kit is designed to get the best out your Laney amp. Authentic American Rock tone that has that crunchy harmonic kick and punch that is not equalled by another 6L6 type.

The Harma ECC83 STR is used as it has a number of advantages over other 12AX7 types such as reduced microphonics and better isolation from vibration. This is particularly useful in combo applications. The valve is very well balanced with nice even bass which has plenty of depth. The mid range is clean and transparent which removes the mush and fizz that happens when the amp is overdriven.

The Philips 6L6WGB are the original small bottle American Military JAN 6L6WGB/5881 that was made for the USA Military in the mid-1980's These are Full Jan Specification which means that they are long life and superbly made with the highest grade materials. No modern day 6L6GC valve is made to this specification.

No other valves give this amp that punchy harmonic kick to the sound. The valve has that tight midrange attack that provides that rich midrange twang. The top end is open and clear with a nice crunchy chime. Solo's and riffs are fat with a rich warm harmonic sustain.
Power chords are perfect with enough crunch to add impact to the music with plenty of top string detail. Picking chord and runs simply jump out of the speakers so excellent for a wide variety of sounds.

If your Laney is fitted with EL34 I would get a local tech to rebais it for the 6L6WGB.
This combination will suit the Traditional classic Rock guitarist and blues Player or those wishing to add a little Fender style sparkle. The Philips 6L6WGB does not get muddy and fizzy under extreme saturation or when heavily boost. Hit a clean boost in the front end for vintage Clapton biting solos with all the clarity that only the Philips provides.
