This is General Electric 6AC10 compactron valve that some are claiming that they are a valid replacement for a 6C10.

The 6C10 is a 3 section triode that has 100 mu per section and was designed by GE as a 12AX7 style replacement.

The 6CA10 is also a 3 section triode but it has 62 mu per section so it has a 40% gain reduction when compared to a 6C10 so is a totally different animal and is nearer to an ECC81

The sound difference is just like replacing a ECC83/12AX7 in your amplifiers V1 position with an ECC81/12AT7 and reducing the gain by 40%.

This I tried, around 2004, in a Fender Super Champ, and I found that the resulting sound to be cleaner but with less crunch and punch.

The overall tone smoother and cleaner exactly the opposite of what I wanted at the time and so dismissed the idea. This concept was a nonstarter as 6C10 valves were still available at the time.

Now in 2026 original 6C10 are obsolete and though we do still have a small stock of original 6C10. When these are gone then the 6AC10 is an option at a greatly reduced price.

6AC10 is completely different from a 6C10 in terms of height (see picture 2) and is a get out of jail card if you are selling an amp or cannot run to a real 6C10.

Electrically it is different valve but will work in place of a 6C10 without causing any damage to your amplifier. For this reason some dealers and technicians are using these as a subs.

We have a very small stock of these so if your 6C10 has died and you have not got the funds to buy a genuine replacement. Then these will get you amp up and running.
