Ruby EL34 BHT
The Ruby EL34BHT was first brought to my attention many years ago by Adrian Emsley the head of design at Orange amps. He told me that he felt these were the best sounding EL34 on the market.
These are now very rare and thes EL34BHT have become very sought after because of their sound quality.
I am glad to say I have a small stock of these available.
Ruby claimed at the time that EL34BHT were developed for very high voltage applications
They stated that the EL34BHT would handle 600 volts on the plates but a look at the spec sheets for EL34 in generally show a max plate volts of 800 volts.
Ruby did not market was the fact that the EL34BHT has an increased screen grid capacity. The screen grid on an EL34 typically has a maximum limit of 425V. High screen grids greatly reduces the life of the valve. A
Data sheet does not seem available of the Shuguang made Ruby EL34BHT but it is claimed to be 560 Volts. So in the absence of any facts this I would take with a pinch of salt.
But I have been reliably informed by technicians in the states that these EL34BHT were their first of choice of valves in early vintage Marshall 2203 and Hiwat amplifier as screen voltages were 450 Volts and above in these amps.
EL34BHT has gold plated grid and can be recognised by the oval holes in the anode plate. The valve features the addition of welded wings on the side of the anode plates which helps the valve dissipate heat. So technical a real winner on all accounts.
So how do these sound, in my Radford STA 15 against Original Mullard EL34 I was hugely surprised.
These are a great Hi Fi Valves, perfectly smooth and balanced mid-range emphasis the top end was clear and concise with a Russian style deep bottom end.
In my Marshall the sound is closer to an 6CA7 than an EL34, The valve is a lot cleaner at all levels when compared to a standard EL34.
By using the master volume control to add the distortion the valve gives a smooth even distortion and excellent clarity across all frequencies. The mid band is first rate being big warm and well balanced.
The valve also compresses later, which I liked and has a clear midrange and a smoother top end than most other EL34 when the amp is distorted.
I can see why many guitarist really rate this valve and if Adriam Emsley says something is good, then he normally right.
We have retested all these and they are currently available in Matched Pairs and Quads but we only have a very limited stock.
